Individual AI Coaching Stack and Prompt Library

    Use it when...

Use when an individual wants to develop without waiting for a manager or program.

    What this is

Chapter 4 gives an individual a three-layer, three-rhythm AI coaching stack (Daily, Weekly, Monthly) plus a quarterly human layer, a five-step method to design a personal system, five practice domains, a Personal AI Coaching Canvas, a 30-Day Starter Challenge and a library of 25 prompts. The stack is built so that skills and habits go to AI and identity questions go to a human.

Use when / Do not use when

Use when an individual wants to develop without waiting for a manager or program. Do not use AI prompts for identity, meaning or breakthrough questions. Run the Three Questions Test ("Three Questions Test and Threshold Screen") first. The book's Mistake 1 is using AI for everything.

    LayerTimePurposeTool categorySample prompts (verbatim)
Daily: The Reflection Partner5-10 minutesProcess the day. Surface insights. Prepare for tomorrow.Any foundation model; free works"What's one thing that went well today and why did it work?" / "What's one thing I'd do differently if I could run today again?" / "What's the most important thing for tomorrow and how do I want to show up?"
Weekly: The Practice Partner30-60 minutesDeliberate practice on specific skills you're developing.Role-specific coaching tool for role-specific practice; foundation models for role-play; specialized simulators when available(use the Practice and Communication prompts below)
Monthly: The Pattern Analyst60-90 minutesZoom out. Identify trends in your work and behavior. Spot blind spots you can't see in the daily grind.AI analysis of your journal entries, performance data and feedback you've received"Here are my daily reflections from the past month. What patterns do you notice?" / "Here's feedback I've received from three different people. What themes emerge?" / "What am I avoiding or not seeing about my performance?"
Quarterly: Human for transformation work (minimum)Booked aheadThe big questionsA human: coach, mentor, therapist or trusted peern/a (not an AI layer)

Weekly use cases (book): rehearse difficult conversations before they happen; practice presentations with feedback on structure and delivery; get feedback on written communication (emails to executives, project proposals); scenario planning for upcoming challenges. Why each layer works (book): Daily, reflection with AI is a forcing function and articulation creates insight. Weekly, skill needs repetition with feedback and AI gives unlimited practice without another human's time. Monthly, people are poor at seeing their own patterns (too close, rationalize, recency bias).

Designing Your Personal System (five steps, verbatim headings and prompts)

Step 1: Audit Your Development Needs

    • What skills are you actively building? Be specific. Not "leadership." Instead: "facilitating discussions where stakeholders disagree."
    • What habits are you trying to form? "Weekly planning sessions where I align my time to priorities."
    • What decisions are you facing? "Whether to take the manager track or stay as an individual contributor."
    • What identity questions are you wrestling with? "Who do I want to become in the next five years?"

Step 2: Map Needs to the Framework

    • Skills and habits → Daily and Weekly layers (AI handles this)
    • Decisions requiring analysis → Monthly layer (AI analyzes, human decides)
    • Identity questions → Human coach, mentor, or therapist (AI cannot handle this)

    Step 3: Choose Your Tools

    • One foundation model for daily and weekly work. Pick one. Don't tool-hop. Consistency matters more than features.
    • One tracking method. Journal, app, spreadsheet. Whatever you'll actually use.
    • One human relationship for transformation work. Coach, mentor, therapist, or trusted peer who knows you well.

    Step 4: Build Your Rhythms

    • Attach AI practices to existing habits (morning coffee for daily reflection; Sunday afternoon for practice time; first Monday of the month for pattern review). "Don't create new time. Attach to time you already have."
    • Schedule weekly practice like a meeting with yourself. Block it. Protect it.
    • Block monthly review time in advance. "First Monday of every month, 90 minutes, non-negotiable."
    • Book human coaching sessions quarterly minimum. Put them on the calendar now.

    Step 5: Measure and Iterate

    • Track: Am I actually doing this? "Consistency is the only metric that matters early."
    • Notice: What's working? What feels useless? What am I skipping?
    • Adjust: Add what helps. Remove what doesn't. Modify based on results, not theory.

The Five Practice Domains for Individuals (book)

    DomainWhat to practiceBook example
    1. CommunicationRehearse difficult conversations; practice presentations until structure is automatic; refine written communication via feedback on drafts; tone checks on emails when stakes are highTelling your manager you're overwhelmed without sounding weak: role-play three approaches and get feedback
    2. Decision-MakingScenario analysis ("What happens if I choose X versus Y?"); red-team your thinking ("What am I missing in this decision?"); map consequences; test assumptions explicitlyTwo job offers, one pays more and one offers better learning: AI cannot tell you what to choose but can map what each optimizes for and what you give up
    3. Problem-SolvingDialogue through root cause analysis; practice applying frameworks to real situations; stress-test solutions; AI as sparring partner for creative thinkingA project behind schedule that you assume is resourcing: examine scope creep, unclear requirements, technical debt and the evidence for each
    4. Emotional IntelligencePerspective-taking ("How might my manager be seeing this situation?"); recognize patterns ("When do I get defensive?"); reframe triggers; simulate conflict to practice responding instead of reactingA colleague dismissed your idea in a meeting: before firing off an email, explore what might have been happening for them and how you want to show up
    5. Strategic ThinkingLong-term planning dialogues; stakeholder mapping before major initiatives; opportunity identification when stuck in execution; priority clarification when everything feels urgentA reactive, firefighting team: map recurring fires, root cause, and which single fix has the biggest impact

The Personal AI Coaching Canvas (verbatim)

    • Daily: What's my reflection prompt? When does it happen? What tool do I use?
    • Weekly: What skill am I practicing? What does good look like? How do I get feedback?
    • Monthly: What data am I reviewing? What patterns am I looking for? How do I capture insights?
    • Quarterly: Who's my human for transformation work? When are sessions scheduled? What am I working on with them?

    30-Day Starter Challenge (verbatim)

    • Week 1: Daily reflection only. Build the habit.
    • Week 2: Add one weekly practice session. Don't skip daily reflection.
    • Week 3: Continue both. Notice what's changing.
    • Week 4: First monthly review. Look for patterns. Adjust the system.

Prompt Library: 25 Prompts for Personal Development (verbatim; bracketed text is the user's fill-in)

    Communication

    1. "I have a difficult conversation tomorrow about [situation]. Help me prepare by role-playing it."
    2. "Here's an email I'm about to send. What's the tone? What might be misunderstood?"
    3. "I tend to ramble in presentations. Give me feedback on this outline."

Decision-Making 4. "I'm deciding between [X] and [Y]. Help me map the consequences of each choice." 5. "What am I not considering in this decision?" 6. "What would need to be true for [option] to be the right choice?"

Problem-Solving 7. "Here's a problem I'm stuck on: [describe]. What are five different ways to think about this?" 8. "What questions should I be asking about this situation that I'm not asking?" 9. "If this problem keeps recurring, what might be the root cause?"

Emotional Intelligence 10. "I'm feeling [emotion] about [situation]. Help me understand what's underneath that." 11. "How might [person] be experiencing this situation differently than I am?" 12. "What pattern do I keep repeating in these conflicts?"

Strategic Thinking 13. "Here are my current priorities: [list]. Which one would have the most leverage?" 14. "What am I optimizing for in my current work? Is that the right thing?" 15. "If I could only change one thing about how my team operates, what would matter most?"

Reflection 16. "What did I learn today that I don't want to forget?" 17. "What feedback did I receive today, and what does it tell me?" 18. "Where did I show up well today? Where did I fall short?"

Practice 19. "I'm working on [skill]. Give me a practice scenario and feedback on my response." 20. "Here's my attempt at [task]. What specifically should I improve?" 21. "What does good look like for [skill]? How far am I from that?"

Pattern Analysis 22. "Here are my journal entries from the past month. What patterns appear?" 23. "What am I avoiding that keeps showing up in my reflections?" 24. "Where is my energy going versus where I want it to go?" 25. "What story am I telling myself that might not be true?"

    Common mistakes and fixes (book)

    1. Using AI for everything. Symptom: asking AI identity questions ("What should I do with my career?" "Am I a good leader?"). Fix: use the three questions test; if identity, meaning or breakthrough, escalate to a human.
    2. Using AI for nothing. Symptom: waiting for someone else to develop you. Fix: start with five minutes of daily reflection.
    3. Inconsistency. Symptom: intense week, three weeks off, guilt, stop. Fix: attach to existing habits; five minutes beats thirty you won't do.
    4. No human anchor. Symptom: AI is your only development relationship. Fix: keep at least one human (mentor, coach or peer) who knows your development journey.

How to run it (Performance Lab suggested practice)

    1. Complete Step 1 on paper with the client. Name one skill, one habit, one decision and one identity question, each in the client's words.
    2. Fill the Personal AI Coaching Canvas before choosing a tool.
    3. Start the 30-Day Starter Challenge on a specific date. Record each day done or skipped.
    4. At the end of week 4, hold the monthly review and revise the canvas.
    5. Route any prompt answer that turns into an identity question to the quarterly human ("Three Questions Test and Threshold Screen", "Escalation Decision Tree and Non-Delegable List").
    6. Do not run prompts 10, 12 or 25 as a substitute for a human conversation when the client reports strong emotion ("Escalation Decision Tree and Non-Delegable List").
